How To Prepare For A Photoshoot On The Beach in Tulum, Playa del Carmen or Cancun
After being a Wedding Photographer for over 8 years in New York City (www.Unveiled-Weddings.com), I realized that every location is different. In big cities people dress more elegant, there is not so much wind, sun, sand, etc. The reflection of the strong sun on the sea and the sand in the Riviera Maya makes us dazzled and is a bit annoying. But then. How to fix this and take amazing photos on the beach like Tulum, Playa del Carmen or Cancun or any other beach? In order to help you as a couple or family, I have decided to give you some tips here and prepare you successfully for your next family or couple photoshoot on the beach. So if you already have Margarita in hand .. Let’s read!
In the morning or afternoon … There is no other option.
Due to the heat and humidity that we have in this part of southern Mexico, the best time to take photos is around between 7am and 9am or after 5:30 pm. Especially when they are family photos where we will have children or older women, it is better to do it at this time. Children are usually more awake and energetic in the morning for a 90 min photo session. Imagine taking a photo session with babies or children at 12 noon with a strong sun in Playa del Carmen! Another advantage of doing it at this time are the sunrise and sunset tones that can be captured in the photos. Since the sun at that time is not that strong, it creates very soft and beautiful color tones on people’s skin.
What kind of shoes to wear?
Since this type of session is very relaxed and informal, it is recommended to wear sandals or without shoes! We will be walking in the soft sand of Tulum and maybe we put our feet in the sea or the pool so we do not want to ruin your brand shoes. Another reason is because we are going to be walking and it is better to wear comfortable shoes.
Although we will take the photos in the morning or at sunset, it is still quite hot and especially if you are not used to this type of weather. So please bring enough water to stay hydrated. A couple of small bottles of water per person will suffice.
Bring towels for sweat
Many times we do not realize it and we start to sweat since the climate here is very humid. To avoid that we come out shiny or with the face of a pan with oil, I recommend that you always bring a sweat wipe.
Do you have long hair?
Remember that we will be at the beach and unless it is a very sunny day in summer. There will always be wind so try to bring a hair tie or bra so as not to be disheveled and it looks like we just woke up.
What kind of clothes do you bring?
This is personal, but my recommendation as a visual professional is to bring light and comfortable clothing. If they are family portraits. When all the members are dressed in the same colors it looks great and creates a sense of unity.
If it is a portrait of a bride or groom, long dresses for her look very good. For men no T-shirts with logos please! Something classic and elegant Mediterranean style always looks very cool and casual. It’s all about having fun!
Are you bringing children?
Make sure the children are well fed and hydrated so they are not in a bad mood. Bringing in some of their favorite toys helps keep them distracted. And if you can promise him an ice cream at the end of the session if he behaves well, all the better!
What if it rains?
The weather can change very easily in the Riviera Maya, it may be that the day is very cloudy and 30 min before your session the blue sky and bright sun rise. We understand it very well and as long as you notify us a day before or at least 2 hours before the time of the session. We can easily change the appointment for another more convenient day.
* Extra notes:
Several of the Hotels in Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancun do not allow the entry of external photographers. Please be sure to ask your hotel’s policies regarding attracting outside talent. The reason is that hotels want you to spend every penny with them. But what they don’t tell you is that they almost always hire inexperienced “photographers” on minimum wage and will put no effort into creating incredible memories for you and your family.
When your hotel does not allow to attract external talent, your photographer will do everything possible to sneak out and see you on the beach of your hotel (By law, all beaches are public in Mexico) but there are times when access is impossible or there is not. In those cases, your photographer will offer you a public beach near you as an alternative option. Thank God we have many beautiful beaches in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun and the entire Riviera Maya.
Now you are better informed of how to prepare for a successful family or couple photoshoot on the Beach. It’s time to book your photo shoot in Tulum, Playa del Carmen or Cancun here!
